Today the board of Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (Greater Stockholm Public Transport) took the decision to choose the Hong Kong based company MTR Corporation (http://www.mtr.com.hk/) as the new operator for the Metro in Stockholm, MTR will succeed Veolia as the operator for the Metro.
The contract is eight year long, with an option for six more years. It´s planned that MTR should overtake the responsibility for the operation in November 2009. The value of the contract is between 20 – 35 billion Swedish crowns (approximate 2 – 3,5 billion Euro) depending on the length (eight or fourteen years)
The operator, MTR, will have full responsibility for the traffic operation, vehicle maintenance, station service and cleaning of vehicles and station etc. MTR will rent vehicles and depots from SL (Storstockholms Lokaltrafik).
The vehicle maintenance will be done by a sub supplier, a company with the name Tunnelbane teknik (Metro technique) that´s an joint venture in between MTR and the Norwegian vehicle maintainer Mantena.

Two main groups exist, the older type of cars, which is called Cx (C6, C14 and C15) and the new type of cars which is called C20.
Three cars of type C20 forms one full length train, eight cars of the older type Cx forms one full length train (in peak hours approximate 105 full length trains is in operation)

Cx
Cx is the umbrella term for C6, C14 and C15, the remaining types of the old generation.
In total 1300 veichles of type C1 – C15 was built in between 1949 – 89, but the maximum number in operation at the same time was 900. The type is based on a car delivered to New York subway during the 40ties.
They are both technical and visual rather identical and all types could be used in multiple operations with each other, a train could therefore contain different types of Cx cars.
